Coastal Gujarat — including Kutch, Jamnagar, and Bharuch districts — presents a challenging environment for bulk storage structures. Cement silos in these regions must account for several factors that inland installations may not face with equal severity.
IS 875 Part 3 classifies coastal areas in Kutch within wind zone V with a basic wind speed of 50 m/s. Silo structures with their tall, cylindrical geometry experience significant wind-induced moments at the base. The foundation must be designed for the worst combination of vertical load, overturning moment, and seismic force simultaneously.
Salt-laden air accelerates corrosion dramatically compared to inland locations. A silo without proper surface protection can show visible corrosion within 2-3 years in coastal zones. Our recommended approach includes blast cleaning to Sa 2.5, zinc-rich primer at 75 microns DFT, epoxy intermediate coat, and polyurethane topcoat for a total DFT of 250 microns.
Kutch falls in Seismic Zone V. Silos filled with cement are massive structures and experience significant seismic forces when the content is at maximum fill level. Sloshing effects and the variation in seismic load with fill level must be accounted for in the structural design.
Coastal silos require more frequent inspection and maintenance. Design must include safe access platforms at each major level and provisions for scaffolding attachment during maintenance painting cycles.
